表紙はゴードン、ヘンリー、ジェームスの大型機関車３台ですが、トーマス、パーシー、エドワードが登場するお話もあります。
「ヘンリーとサーカスのぞう」「炭水車と転車台」「やっかいな３台の機関車」「パーシーのしっぱい」の４話です。
息子は、大型機関車３台が、客車あつめなどの仕事をいやがって局長に機関庫に閉じ込められ、代わりにトーマス、エドワードが本線を走るお話が大好きだそうです。
富士急ハイランドのライドの一場面にもなっている、トンネルでヘンリーがぞうに出くわすお話、ジェームスが転車台でこまのように回ってしまうお話、
パーシーがゴードンとぶつかりそうになり、バックで逃げるお話など、シリーズの原点になるお話ばかりです。
息子は今年１年生になり、さすがにトーマスのテレビシリーズは見なくなりましたが、この絵本はまだ大好きです。テレビのトーマスの絵本も持っていますが、こちらの汽車のえほんシリーズのほうが、よく読んでいます。図書館で何度も借りた末に、最近発売になったこの本を買いました。長く大事にできる本だと思います。

4.0 out of 5 stars きかんしゃもストライキする, 2007/1/20
青いヘンリーが緑に復活。トーマスが支線をまかされたため客車集めを自分たちでやらなくてはいけないゴードンたち。もう不満たらたら。そんなときサーカスがやってきてジェームズが引くことに。もう今度は自慢たらたら。ある朝トンネルがつまっているとヘンリーが作業員を乗せてトンネルへ。トンネル恐怖症のヘンリーをわざわざ。つまっている原因はサーカスの象だった。機関車より強いパワーでヘンリーを押し出す。サーカスの人が衣装のまま象を迎えに来る。夜ゴードンたちに今日の話をすると「それはお気の毒に」とストレートな意見を。
その他機関車たちのストライキの話しも面白い。
