　最後の授業は小学校６年の国語の教科書に載っており、最後に先生が「フランス万歳！」という箇所は今でも印象に残っています。

　でも、大人になってから、対象となるアルザス・ロレーヌ地方の歴史を調べてみて疑問に感じました。なぜなら、少なくとも、アルザス州とロレーヌ州の一県の住民は、その地方の方言をしゃべり、ルターが作った標準ドイツ語で表記しており、フランス語は後で入ってきた言語だからです。前にロレーヌ州ナンシー市の観光局の方にこの件をお伺いしましたが、納得行く答は得られませんでした。 　それでもこの作品は名作であり、子ども達にも読んでほしいと思います。でも大人になってから真実は真実として教えねばとも思います。

この『最後の授業』を初めて読む方なら、この作品の表面的な意味だけを辿って読むのが普通だと思います。
フランスの一地方がどんな歴史を持っているのかなんて一介の日本人には興味がないでしょうし、知らなくても心に響くものがある内容なのですから。
けれど、もし二回三回とこの作品を読み返すならば、読み返す前に作品の舞台となったアルザス地方の歴史、そしてフランス・ドイツとの関わり方について一通り調べてみることをお勧めします。
そうすれば、この『最後の授業』の別の側面が見えてくるでしょう。

平凡の中、繰り返し繰り返し何気なく過ごしてきた毎日。何事にも「最後」が訪れるとは思ってもみない。
戦争は確実に、人々に「最後」がある事を気づかせる。子供たちにも、つまり主人公にも・・・。
私たちは気づかなければなりません。そして今何をするか、明日から何をしてゆくか。
そして、気づいたなら行わなければなりません。夢を持って。
