年寄り機関車のｽｶｰﾛｰｲが修理に出されている間、若い２台の機関車はとても忙しかったのです。ｻｰ・ﾊﾝﾃﾞﾙはゴードンに愚痴ります。良い？考えを伝授されたｻｰ･ﾊﾝﾃﾞﾙがとった行動は・・・。

帰ってきたｽｶｰﾛｰｲには新しい機関車との出会いがあります。そして小さな鉄道には隅から隅まで見に来た人達、ﾋﾟｰﾀｰ･ｻﾑは売られるのではないかと心配しますが、それはテレビ局の人達でした。ｽｶｰﾛｰｲの誕生日のお祝いが行われます。

ｽｶｰﾛｰｲの落ち着いた態度、若い機関車たちの働きぶり、そして絵に描かれる自然の何気ない美しさに、なんだかほのぼのとした雰囲気が感じられます。こんなところにピクニックに行けたらなぁ・・・
なんて思う一冊です。
