この本は機関車トーマスが成長し一人前になる過程を書いたもので私はこの本を読んで育った。トーマスが大きな駅の操車場で働きながら失敗をし、意地悪な貨車にいじめられるといった教訓のような場面だけでなく、ジェームスの脱線事故のときには必死になって事故を片付けたことにより、貨車を引くことの難しさを理解し、本物の機関車になったとふとっちょの重役に認められた。見習のような形だったトーマスがひとつの支線を任されるまで成長を描き他の巻にない成長がわかる一冊だと思う。
