　訳あって週に一度図書館に行き、その都度約二時間、だいたい三ヶ月で読了となりました。いたしかたなかったとはいえ、そして先が気になるもどかしさに悶々と身を捩らされることにもなりはしましたが、結果としてはそうした読み方をしたことがあるいはよかったのでは、と今では思われます。というのもこの物語は、強烈な残像を残さずにはおかない簡潔な単文節の精緻な折り重なりによって語られていくのですが、それは少なくともわたしには、一週間のブランクを空けることによってようやく咀嚼しうるものであったように思われるからだし、その筆鋒は他に類を見ないくらい、じつに鋭利だったからです。「現代最高の中国学者キーン」及びその周辺の人びとの口を借り、まさに情け容赦のないそのペンによって自らが切り刻まれていく過程は、実際恐怖に近いものがありました。と同時に、言うまでもなくそれはある種の「ほどけ」を伴う愉悦でもあった。何かしら福音めいたものが訪れるわけではありませんが、一種の危機的状況に対し極めて有効に働く回路としての物語、一読した今はそんな印象を持っています。次に読む際には自分がどう感じるか、それがとても楽しみです。

変わった人が出てくる小説が好きだが、「カラマーゾフ」以上の個性人が揃う。本好き、書籍愛好家を自負する人は、果たして主人公の「キーン」に勝てるかどうか、ぜひ自分と比較して読んでみると面白いのでは？私は「負けた」と思いました(ｰｰ;)。「孤独の人」と呼ばれた作者にも、きっと「テレ―ゼ」のモデルになるような女性が側にいたのではないか？「夫の愛を確認できない主婦なんて、家政婦以下」と考えたことがあるが、「テレ―ゼ」の考え方はまさしくそれ。「退屈な読書好きの主婦」には、「そうよね~」と共感できるところ多々。普通の男には絶えられない世界かも。「群集」について考えつづけた人だけあって、中盤は圧巻。

20数年ぶりに再読。
これは20世紀を代表する世界文学であり、ギュンター・グラスの『ブリキの太鼓』や武田泰淳の『富士』を凌ぎ、トーマス・マン『ファウスト博士』『ブッデンブロークス』、大岡昇平『俘虜記』、大西巨人『神聖喜劇』、ジョイス『ユリシーズ』、プルースト『失われた時を求めて』に匹敵する。
私見ではカフカの『城』は本作品の足元にも及ばない。にも拘らず、本作は継子扱いされているとしか思えない。版元の数年前の復刊には喝采を惜しまないが、一部の巨大書店にしか置いていない。しかも、致し方ないにせよ高額すぎる。とは言え、小説好きは何をおいても確保に急ぐべし。
