　小林秀雄の批評文学の軌跡をコンパクトにまとめてある。事実だけを羅列した生涯史ではなく、随所に研究者としての鋭い考察も加えられている。著者の小林秀雄についての基本的な見方は、かけがえのない個性を持つ自分というものについて考えを究めた批評家だ、というものであろう。

　残念なことに前半の充実ぶりに比べて、後半の叙述には薄さを感じてしまうところがある。特に『近代絵画』を正面から取りあげていないのは、疑問が残るところ。これは、小林の作品の中でも、もっとも内容の濃いものだと個人的に思うので（特に「セザンヌ」！）。そもそも小林の戦後の歩みを扱うには紙数が足りなかったのだろう。この著者の本格的な小林論としては「〈孤独〉から〈無私〉へ」をとりあげるべきである。ちなみに『近代絵画』については、中村光夫、寺田透、粟津則雄などの論がそれぞれ違う面で優れていた記憶がある。

　とはいえ、小林の二つの新しい全集が出た折り、それを読んでいこうとする人にとって、この本はとても便利だ。このタイプの小林論が現在品切れ・絶版になっていること、最近文芸文庫で復活した江藤淳の『小林秀雄』が戦後のほぼ始まりまでしか扱っていないことなどを考えると、価値は大きい。文章も研究者のものとしては読みやすいし、値段も手頃である。小林の文学を概観するのに格好の一冊であることは間違いない。
