日本の伝統仏教がちょっとまずい状態にある。なんとかしなければ、ということで、日本仏教のリアルな現状把握と、それを左右している現代社会の問題や現代人の心のあり様の分析をこころみた、問題定義の本である。まとめ役は「宗教学」の立場から日本人の宗教的な民族性や仏教の思想的な深み、そして生命倫理のような最新の議題まで、第一線で考察し続けてこられた藤井氏である。

伝統仏教は、「葬式仏教」なるものにどっぷりとつかってきたがゆえに骨抜きにされ、そしていま、「葬式仏教」から脱皮してなおその存在意義を主張しうるのか、というところで困惑している。「死」とくらべればこれまでおろそかにしてきた人々の「生」に向き合い、仏教は個々人の役に立つことができるか？「仏教再生への道すじ」をめぐる論点は、ますはそこにある。
