純真な子供向けの童話が、毒はあるが高級な大人向けの小説に見事に変身を遂げている。深みのある心理描写や、普段はさりげない外見の下に隠されている人間の本質を鋭く問いかけているあたりも、かなり読み応えがある。

ここまで売れた本に、今更付け加えるものもないという気もするが。残酷さやエロティシズムといった面にばかり気をとられ、つい見逃してしまいがちだが、当時の社会状況を背景に、人間の愛やエゴや憎しみの本質がリアルに描き出されている。童話のシンプルなストーリーのなかにはもともと、このように様々な読み取り方が出来る要素があるのだと思う。目からうろこが落ちるような思いにさせられた。

子供のお話だと思っていたグリム童話が実は怖い話だったというのが、一応この本のウリなのだろうが、残酷描写や性描写などの過激な表現に余り囚われ過ぎると、この本の本当の面白さを見逃してしまいそうだ。普通は人間が隠しておこうとする闇の部分を、執拗なまでにえぐり出している。その強烈さに最初は反発してしまうのだが、何度も読み返すと共感を感じないではいられない。一度魅力を感じてしまうと、最初反発しただけに、かえって激しく虜になってしまいそうだ。そういう不思議な魅力を秘めている。
