　「四十郎化け物始末」シリーズの第１弾。
　無数のシリーズ・キャラクターを手がけている風野氏だが、このシリーズは白眉だろう。化け物退治という題材のなかに独特のアイデアが盛り込まれているし、化け物退治をする主人公が弱気で情けない浪人であるという人物造形もはまっている。読んでいて飽きない物語だ。
　連作短篇の形式を取っており、本書には５篇が収められている。
　殺陣のシーンにも工夫があり、面白い。
