乙女な感じのクラッシックなホテルが満載です。
関東圏がほぼすべてで、
箱根の富士屋ホテル、軽井沢の万平ホテル、
日光金谷ホテルなどが好きな方なら
きっと好きな本になると思います。
中には「古いホテルより、最新の
きれいなピカピカしてるところに泊まりたい！」という
方もいらっしゃるでしょう。

そういう方には不向きな本です。

装丁も中身も大変美しいですが、
ただひとつ残念なのが、
本の大半が白黒である、ということ。
できることならすべてをカラーで見たかった。

素敵なホテルばかりが出ているので
それが残念でなりません。
オールカラーだったら間違いなく星4つです。

そもそも、旅行に行く人口は圧倒的に女性の方が多いのに、
旅行エッセイは男性筆者が多く、読んでいて今までは、なぜかしっくりと来なかった。
それは、男性の視点と女性のそれでは、明らかに違うからで、
甲斐さんの、旅行エッセイは、私たち女性のツボを得た、
本当に知りたいと思っていた情報、心情を突いてくる。
読んでいて、言葉がストンと心に落ちてきて、非常に心地よい。
雑学の記述も、上から物を言うような表現はなく、
優しい言葉で、お友達と話しているような語り口で、素敵なんですよ。

一般庶民の私が、常々憧れ続け、
上流階級の雰囲気を味わえるけれど、
今まではランチやお茶をするのが精一杯だった、

箱根の富士屋ホテル、

日光の金谷ホテル、

熱海のヴィラ・デル・ソル、

軽井沢の万平ホテル。

その高い敷居を少しだけ下げてくれた感じ。

そして案内は都内のホテルにまで及び、
今は、小説の中にしか存在しない　
本郷菊富士ホテルを紹介していて、作者の見識の深さに感銘です。

学士会館や九段会館、
今度、ぜひ泊まりに行きます！

初めてのクラシックホテル体験は
箱根富士屋ホテルでのテーブルマナー教室でした。
フルコースのお食事をいただく前に
料理長によるレモンメレンゲパイの作り方の講習がありました。
メレンゲという、当時まだ目当たらしかったお菓子の装飾が
日常から非日常へと、私を誘ってくれました。
制服に身を包み、いつもよりすました風情でナイフとフォークを
手にしていた、１０代の頃の思い出です。

この本のページをくるたびに
そんなクラシックホテルにまつわる小さな思い出が
よみがえってきます。
