この本は違う。
最近、うわべだけの、小手先だけの受験テクニックや、人生をうまく操る世渡り術ばかりがもてはやされ、「好きなことを極めろ」なんて思想は青臭い現実逃避だと言われがち、何を甘えとんのじゃ、それじゃ食うていけないと責められがちの世の中だけれど、
この本は違う。
ドロップ・アウトしたっていいじゃない。自分をしっかりと見つめて、世間的な成功ではなく、自分を納得させようと熱く語っている。
たとえば、大学の勉強はさぼっていても、ワンダーフォーゲル部に入り山登りに熱中する。授業は全く出席していなくても、東京の街並みが好きで、そこらじゅう散歩して歩くうち、江戸時代の東京地理に興味が及び、非常に優れた卒論を書く。有名大学に入ったはいいが、スシ屋さんになりたいと思い、大学を辞める。

一見、ただの「ムダ」のように思える行為を、作者はよしとする。
一眼的な価値観に縛られないその考え方は、非常に好感が持てた。

他人の評価のもとに人生を築くか、自分のしっかりとした足の上に人生を築くか。
大学はその方向を定める重要なターニング・ポイントだ。

気づくか、気付かないかで、人生は大きく色を変えるだろう。
私はもう大人になってしまって、取り戻せないことも多いけれど、
この本には勇気と背中を押す力をもらった。

地味な表紙に臆さず、若い学生にぜひ。
