私は数字、統計のネタ、話題を好きなのでこの手の本には
飛びつきます。

様々なトピックスがあり、最初から最後まで飽きさせません。
著者が数理工学専攻、情報処理研究所に勤めているからかも
しれません。

興味を引いたネタにＪリーグのトトくじは勝ち、負け、引き分け
の３通りしかなくて組み合わせは６試合。だから３の６乗
つまり７２９通り買えば必ず当たる。

日本の不良債権は１円玉を積み上げると（換算すると）
地球から木星までの距離よりも遠くまでいくなど
笑えないブラックユーモアまでありました。

前半は、数、特に確率にまつわる、興味深い話が紹介されています。降水確率ってなんだ？保険は儲かるのか、平均寿命、ギャンブル、宝くじ、数をつかったトリック（確率や統計のウソ）もあります。沢山の分野から例が挙げられ、「確率的に考えるとどうか」「どこにトリックが潜んでいるか」という感じです。平均、標準偏差、組み合わせなどの用語も出てきますが、丁寧に説明されています。中学校の数学レベルでしょうか。

後半は、数をどう実感するか、どう受け取るか、そのセンスを磨く内容です。世界の軍事費を実感するには、宇宙の年齢、国家予算、ナノの世界など、ちょっとピンと来ない数字を、例などで、実感できるように説明されています。言われてみれば、そうだなぁ、とまさに「実感」。

全体的に「数の随筆」として、楽しめる本でした。数式もホトンド出ていませんし、気軽に読める本です。

数に関連する雑学。

前半は数学の仕組みを解説していて面白いが、後半の数学、
数字に関連した小説、映画の内容が単なる紹介で終わっている。

作品に取り上げられた数学、数字を少し掘り下げて欲しかった。
