この本は、入口としてはスポーツマンシップについてとなっているが、内容は教育や社会構造にまで通じている。既存の事実を改めて整理してあるというのではなく、新しい視点でスポーツを見つめている内容である。スポーツに関わる人だけでなく、経営者達に支持されるのも納得できる。スポーツがビッグビジネスの場となっている今の時代だからこそ、読んでおきたい内容である。

「スポーツマン」
日本の国語辞典→運動能力に秀でた人。
オックスフォード英英辞典→Good Fellow
この本が出版されてから４年、日本でスポーツマンシップといった概念は当時より浸透していると思われる。フェアプレーはもちろんのこと素直に負けを認め、それでいて頭を垂れず、相手をたたえる「Good loser」であることを包括的に言い表しているのが「スポーツマンシップ」である。

これを実践することによって、相手、審判、ルールを「尊重」する精神が生まれる。それは選手の人格育成につながり、そのスポーツ自体も発展していく可能性を持つようになる。

勝つために行うスポーツではなくて、道徳的成長、個人の確立など大衆スポーツを行う人へスポーツを行う意義が明確に記されている。
