本書を読みふけるあいだ、幸せな時間だった。
つかのま、時の歩みが停まったような、そんな気がした。

本書は、歿後初めて編まれた、まとまった愛蔵本である。
読みどころは多数あるが、なかでも白眉といえるのが、「『時刻表昭和史』を追う」と「作家の原点　中央公論社時代の宮脇」の２本だ。
「『時刻表昭和史』を追う」では、大正15年に生を受け、昭和の戦争とともに歩んだ宮脇俊三氏の若き日々が鮮やかに再現されている。
一方、紀行しか知らないファンに貴重なのが、中央公論在職時代を振り返った「作家の原点　中央公論社時代の宮脇」だろう。
自身はあまり語らなかったが、宮脇氏は、まちがいなく出版界を代表する辣腕編集者のひとりであった。

執筆している面々の多彩ぶりにも、人徳がうかがえる。
「オール讀物」の担当編集者だった、加藤保栄こと中村彰彦氏をはじめ、本書に登場する誰もが、静かに宮脇氏をしのび、その人柄への敬意に満ちた文章を寄せている。

個人的には、夫人から提供された宮脇氏の写真や、書斎に並ぶ本の書名を初めて見ることができてうれしかった。

このムック、おそらくは宮脇俊三氏の愛読者でもある編集者の仕事ではないかと思います。

宮脇作品を国内、海外、歴史紀行の３つに大きく分け、写真と、宮脇氏をよく知る人の文章で紹介していきます。

ただ、この本を作る側も、買うのは宮脇作品をこよなく愛する（マニアも含む＾＾；）人たちだと分かっているのでしょう、ありきたりな解説や、ひとりよがりな礼賛などはありません。
寄せられた文章の多くは練達の士によるもので、宮脇氏の会社勤めの頃の貴重な証言であったり、紀行に同行した編集者やカメラマンなどによる描写や思い出であったりします。宮脇氏はプライベートのことはあまり文章にしていないので、氏の亡き今、これまで知らないできた氏の別の一面を知ることができ、愛読者の渇えを聊か慰めてくれます。

そして、写真は初めて見るものがほとんどです。考えてみれば、氏は雑誌に掲載したものは別として、本にまとまったものには写真が付されたもの非常に少ないのではないでしょうか？
紀行中の氏のスナップ、氏が旅した頃の鉄道写真など、恐らくは選り抜いたラインナップです。
さらには、読者は皆知っているであろう、「２万キロ塗りつぶし用白地図」が見開きでついていて、感涙ものです。

ただ・・・読み終えて感じるのは、氏の不在の大きさ（あるいは氏の後を継ぐ、若しくは氏に匹敵する紀行文の書き手の不在）です。無いものねだりですので、氏の作品を読み返していく仕儀となります＾＾；

宮脇氏の各著作について、作家や写真家、編集者が一記事を書くという体裁が非常に面白い。その中にまた「二十数年後の『国鉄全線大集会』」など、「ファンがツボを押さえた」というような記事も多く必見である。
ただ、最長片道切符の写真のキャプションで経由地がびっしりと書き込まれた裏面の写真を「経路を書いた別紙」と紹介するなど（「別紙」になったのは後年種村直樹氏がやったときの話である）、この本を手に取る人（ファン）なら誰でも気付くようなポカが散見されるのがもったいない。編集出身の宮脇先生は如何お思いのことだろう。
また、時が時なら、きっと宮脇先生が心底ほれ込んでいた夕張市に取材を敢行したんでしょうね……などと思いつつの☆１つ減。
