桜井 武
1944年静岡県生まれ。慶應義塾大学文学部仏文科卒業。東京画廊勤務の後、シカゴ・アート・インスティテュートに留学。ブリティッシュ・カウンシルでアーツ担当官を務め、美術、音楽、演劇など幅広い分野の交流に携わる。1991年には大英勲章(MBE)を授与。美術史家として新聞・雑誌などに執筆。2008年4月より熊本市現代美術館館長(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

一冊物の「ロンドン」ガイドブックに物足りない人、これからロンドンの美術館をじっくり見ようと考えている人にお勧めの一冊です。

特にロイヤルアカデミー、ケンウッドハウスなど類書が少ない美術館について事前に知識を深めるのには最適です。また、各美術館のホームページアドレスも紹介してあるので、読み終えた後は展覧会の日程などもチェックできますし、必然的にしたくなると思います。一方、各作品の図版は少ないので絵画自体が目当ての人には向かない本です。

新書でここまでの完成度なら星５つが適当と考えます。また、ロイヤルアカデミーで過去に開催された展覧会で９９年の「ヴァン・ダイク」の回顧展（１３桁ＩＳＢＮ9780847821969 ）を高く評価している点からみても、著者はかなりの回数、展覧会鑑賞経験があると思われます。

以上のことから、今後は本書がロンドンの美術館入門としての基準書となるでしょう。

ロンドンで絵画などを所蔵しているのは、おもに次のようなところらしい。
　大英博物館
　テイトブリテン、テイトモダン
　ナショナルギャラリー
　ウォーレスコレクション
　ロイヤルアカデミーオブアーツ
　コートールド美術館：ゴッホの浮世絵が紛失したまま
　ヴィクトリアアルバート美術館
　サージョンソーンズ美術館
　クイーンズギャラリー

一度もロンドン市内に行ったことがないので、最初に行く前には、よく熟読して、
どこを訪問するか決めようと思っています。

これからロンドンの美術館巡りをするのに購入しました。
どの美術館も歴史から、代表作品の解説まで載っていて、美術館好きにはたまらない本だと思います。カラーの絵は少ないので、知識を深めたい人にお勧めです♪
この本に掲載されている美術館、全部行きたくなりました。
（時間的に不可能だとは思いますが・・・笑）
ロンドンにも持っていきます！
