神道を解説した本には良いものが見当たらない。アストンの『神道』は密度の濃い体系化されたものだが、記紀を読んでいないと理解に苦しむ箇所もところどころにある。

さて、本書ではこうした課題や解説する難題をいかに一般読者までレベルを落とし、判りやすく解説するかに重点が置かれたのだろうと感じる。

果たして、その成果はおおむねクリアーされていて、何よりもとても判りやすい言葉で書いてあり、神道未経験の読者には目新しさタップリの内容になっている。と同時に、日本の伝統的美学を堪能できるのではないだろうか。

仏教と神道の差異が認識でき、我々の血に流れている神道という本質が理解できる、大変有意義な本である。これを機に、神道、ひいては神社に興味を持つ人が多くなること請け合いの良書だった。

日本の代表的な神道学者の書いた解説書ということで面白く読んだ。ただ、新書版という限界もあり、それぞれ発想のサワリだけで終わっている部分もあり、あらかじめ神道について相当知識がある人でないと逆に読みこなせない可能性もある。同じ井上教授の本でも図解雑学神道の方は、神道思想の構造や歴史が体系的に分かり易く解説されており、こちらを先に読んで具体的な知識をつけてから本書を読んだ方が理解が進むかもしれない。

体系的な入門書。今日における神道研究の成果を一望できる。よくもまあここまで網羅的な情報を、てきぱきとまとめたものだなあと感心する。
「神社」という空間・建築の話から始まって、国家を軸とした制度論、組織・教団の流れをおさえ、理論家や教祖の個性あるいは教義や儀礼の意味の解説をしていく。これら「見える神道」から今度はふつうの人々のあまり自覚的ではない「見えない神道」の方に視点をかえて、神棚を中心とする家内の行事やお祭り、陰陽道とも結びつきの強い俗信（日柄方位など）に話題が移る。そして最後に、「神道」をこれまで伝えてきた伝統的な「回路」がところどころでぶち切れている現代社会で、それでもどのようなメディアが「神道」を伝達しあるいは再創造しているのかを検討していく。
この驚くほど見事な「神道入門（「学」入門の方が適切か）」が成立しているのは、基本的にこの宗教を「情報」というフラットな観点から捉えているからだろうと思う。変な信心や偏った姿勢がないから、多大な専門的知識もすごく平明でわかりやすくなるのだ。ただ、ちょっとクールすぎるかもしれない。もっと熱い議論を求める人は鎌田東二氏の新書（PHP）、また学問的なのよりも実用的な入門をしたい方には武光誠氏のそれ（河出書房新社）を推薦します。
