なんだか久しぶりに新書らしい新書を読んだような気がする。「あんパン」に対する「取り敢えず」の好奇心は十分に満たされる。そして、取り敢えずの興味が満たされた後には、これまで以上の興味が喚起させられてしまう構成になっている。古き良き時代、新書とは基本的に本書のような構成を取るものだった。本書の著者は1944年生まれ。もしかすると著者も「新書とはかくあるべし」と存分に知恵を詰め込んで書いてくれたのかもしれない。著者の思いを受け止めて、もう何冊かあんパン本を探してみたいと思っている。「あんパンが好き」「新書が好き」「清水の次郎長が好き」という人にはぜひお勧めの１冊だ。

銀座木村屋の「あんパン」と言えば、ある意味銀座のシンボルである。本書は木村屋を初めとする「あんパン」の歴史を綴った熱き物語。

創業者からしてまず驚く。木村安兵衛という武士だったのだ。彼とその息子達は"武士の商法"という下手の代名詞を覆し、山岡鉄舟と知己を得て、その伝で「あんパン」を明治天皇に献上。更に徳川慶喜の好物の一つにもなる。また、同じく鉄舟の力を借り、清水次郎長のバックアップを得て静岡と焼津に支店を出す。芝居を書こうと思っても、こんな人間関係は思い付かない。この他、鹿鳴館時代のチンドン屋を用いた宣伝、ニセ木村屋の出現等、話題は尽きない。最後に木村屋は全国展開をする。

「あんパン」にこのような歴史があったのかと驚く事請け合いの快作。

　著者はノンフィクション・ライター。
　銀座木村屋は日本のパン屋のさきがけとして知られる。しかし、創業時にすぐさまパン食が受け入れられたわけでもないし、製造法にも色々と苦労があったという。しかし、明治天皇や徳川慶喜らの愛好を受けるなどして、成功の道を歩んでいくことになる。
　本書では、木村屋の歴史が、主として時代状況や社会情勢の側面から紹介されている。日本における食の歴史、明治維新以降の肉食の広まり、公家の食卓、清水次郎長の役割など、多角的にパン食というものが捉えられているのだ。
　しかし、ハッキリ言って、その試みは失敗している。原因は明らかで、本書があまりにも雑なつくりだからだ。色々な本や資料をまとめただけで、総合的な視野に欠けるため、たがいに矛盾したり、つじつまの合わない文章が少なくない。また、枚数に足りなかったためか、余計なエピソードや無関係な記述が多すぎる。歴史理解としても誤っている箇所が少なくない。
　ちょっとひどすぎる本だと思う。
