『大リーグと都市の物語』という題名を見て、「大リーグと各球団が本拠地を置く都市がどのように関わりあってきたかを紹介する本だ」と思われた方にとっては、本書は期待を裏切ることになるだろう。つまり、「大リーグと都市の物語」は、「大リーグの物語と都市の物語」のことで、大リーグ球団と都市にまつわる話が漫然と並べられた、総花的な内容になっているからである。

各話題について比較的詳細に記述しているのは評価に値する。だが、球場の話をしているかと思うと突然日本人選手の話題が付け足しのように触れられる、というように、書名があいまいなのと同様に、どこに焦点を絞っている本なのかが分かりにくい。

また、いつ頃活躍した選手かといった基本事項や、貨幣単位がドル表記のみで当時の日本円での換算レートなどが一切付されていないのは不親切。加えて、「なぜそうなのか」と知りたくなる話題を出すにもかかわらず掘り下げずに次ぎの話題に移ることが多いのは、本書の致命的欠陥といえよう。

大リーグに興味をもち始めた人には勧めにくく、知識のある人には物足りなさが募る一冊だ。

野茂、伊良部の活躍に始まり、いよいよイチローや新庄という野手までも大リーグ入りし、大リーグへの関心が高まる中、時宜を得たやさしい解説書。 日本の企業（というより巨人というわがまま球団）が主体となったプロ野球にどっぷりつかってしまった日本の野球ファンにとって、あくまでフランチャイズ／コミュニティとのつながりを重視する大リーグの思想を正確に理解するためには、その内容をキチンと整理する必要があるが、本書は新書という読みやすいスタイルでそれに応えている。 欲をいえば、スタジアム／ボールパークの設計・構造の解説部分では、もっと図面や写真を取り入れてほしかった。

初めて、リグリー・フィールドに行って以来、フェンウェー・パークとシェイ・スタジアムなどで観戦しています。これらの地域は仕事の関係や知人が住んでいるので、行く機会が多いのですが、他の球場にも行きたくなりました。

ただ、似たような記述が散らばっていたり、論理の流れが読みとりにくい表現もあるのが残念でした。また、最近、新しい野球場の建設が盛んなので、移転計画のあるフェンウェー・パークなどについての住民感情なども、もっと詳しく知りたかったです。

とにかく、アメリカの野球は、チームと野球場とファンが一体となっているのがうらやましいです。Take me to the ballpark!
