この本を読むのに、たいして時間は掛からないけれど、読み進むうちに、「なぜ日本人はカレーが好きなのか？」この疑問が、ふつふつと沸き立ち、読み終えてからもかなりの時間考えてしまう内容でした。

明確な答えが出ないままに終わってしまうけれど、その分この内容について、自分なりの考えをもつことができ、誰かとカレーについて語りたくなる本だと思います。

　『鬱金の謎』や『カレーライス物語』でカレーについて語ってきた著者が、根本的な疑問を抱いて書いた一冊。すなわち、日本人がなぜカレー好きなのか、という問題に迫っている。
　答えは最初から出ていて、カレーが明治期に西洋文明の象徴として受け入れられたから、というもの。まあ、当たり前の回答で、ひねりも何もない。しかし、本書では証拠が見つからないままに終わってしまう。なんとなく、消化不良な感じ。
　しかも、冒頭の部分で、インド発祥のカレーが、インドネシアでもタイでもイギリスでも郷土料理として定着するまでに好まれたと書いてある。つまり、日本人だけがカレーを好きなわけでもないし、西洋の象徴だから広まったわけでもない。
　構成がお粗末すぎると思うのは、私だけではないだろう。
　とはいえ、幕末~戦後にかけての日本のカレー史が興味深く紹介されており、愉しい本であった。特に戦時中のカレー粉づくりには感動した。

タイトルはああなってはいますが
実は歴史メインの本なのであります。
結構日本でのカレーの意外な歴史なんかが出てきたりします。


必見なのは
むろん歴史の中のカレーを作る苦労話。
そう、その中では会社が出てきますが
それは現在でもある企業なのです。
結構名だたる企業が出てくるので
読んでみると面白いです。


それにカレーライスとライスカレーの違いなんていう
なんてことない話にも触れていたりします。
しかし困ったことにこういう本を読むと
無性にカレーが食べたくなるものなのです。
