　フェミニスト、なんだろうけれど、遥洋子みたいに真正面から声高に主張していない。北原みのりに近い新しい軽やかなフェミニストである。

　「でぶかわいい」作者が日々の暮らしの中、友人（オカマも含む）とのお喋りの中考えたことどもについて書いている。過激でないけれど、ハッとさせられる考え方が新鮮なエピソードとともにそこにある。引用される本や漫画やキャラクターや噂話も面白いし、筆者の語り口もリズムが良くて、落ちがある（彼女は詩人でもあり、海外文学についての大学講師でもあるのだ）。

　「めかす、それは誰のためなのか」では、女のお洒落は「戦闘服」であると見破り、「誰のためでもなく自分のためにめかす」はオカマの衣装哲学であるという。そしてどっちがいかしているかと競うのだ。家族の意味を考えてヘヤーインディアンの「テント仲間」（シーズン毎に変わる流動的なメンバー）に憧れ、ウィスコンシン大学で日本文学を教えながら故郷の北海道が日本の植民地であって本当の日本ではなかったと発見する。

　この本が面白いのはそれぞれのエッセイの題を読んだだけでも感じられる。「昼、家にいる女」「セカイとはご近所のことと見つけたり」「部族民デビュー」「観光産業としての峰不二子」「トンガ人いわく、まず自分を笑うべし」「宮刑にいたしましょう」「ジェンダーは二つじゃない」「ただしくない、かためなさい、りこうじゃない、あきらめない」。これらの言葉に少しでも心惹かれる方はぜひどうぞ。読んで楽しく、でも考えさせられます。
