私の専門は素粒子物理学である。理学博士の学位取得後、東洋神秘思想の仏教、ヒンドゥー教を学びに、インド、スリランカなどに行った。目的は初めは理論物理のためであった。現地でお坊様で、大学教授の師から原始仏教を個人的に教授を受け、サンスクリットで書かれた多くの経典を学んだ。大分勉強が進み、お茶を飲みながら師とブロークンな英語で休憩中に、師は布製の鞄から古き一冊の本を出し、私の前に置いた。これが、サンスクリットで書かれし「カーマ・スートラ」であった。師はしずかにおっしゃった、”I present this book, you need it. It contains humanity."　それだけ言って授業がはじまった。この「カーマ・スートラ　完訳」は、若き男女は是非読んでもらいたい！男と女の精神と肉体に関す　る融合のための素晴しき教養書であり、その教養を持って本来の男女の性を実践してもらいたい。書かれしはっきりとした年代は不明だが、数千年前に残された人類への遺産でもある。60にしてこの本キチンと読みました。男性 も女性も精神的な部分を読み取って欲しい。「心」と「体」は不可分なのだから！最後に我が師が”It contains HUMANITY ." とおっしゃった意味良く分かりました。師から頂いたサンスクリット版と新しきこの本、我が本棚で隣どうしで物理の本に囲まれている。

私はインド文学に関してはほとんどド素人なのですが、ひょんなことからこの本を読むことになりました。
経典なので身構えて読んだのですが、素人でも理解できるとても分かりやすい本でした。
基本的には日常の言葉で書かれており、必要な用語には分かりやすい注釈がつけてあります。
出てくる話も普通の人が十分に理解できる形で書かれており、だからといって低俗になったりはしていない、まさに「性学」の経典だと思います。

カーマ・スートラ。この甘美で官能的な響きの虜になったのは、およそ４７０日前である。以来、この一冊の書のせいで、私は大量のカルピスを流すに至った。これは風俗界の五輪の書である。一生に一度、読まなければ死に際に後悔する。性は全ての創造の源泉である。
