　ヒキガエルという比較的身近な野生動物の、知られざる側面の数々を地道な研究によって明らかにした第一級の書。「持続は力なり」という言葉がこれほど似合う研究はなく、読み物としてもたいへん面白い。
　本書で詳述されているように、ヒキガエルは仔を多く成すことによって他の個体と極力争うことなくゆっくりとした速度で生きることを選んだわけだが、それを人間が「平和主義」といったふうに感情移入し擬人化するのは間違いだろう。著者にも一見その手の記述はあるものの、分かったうえでの「私のヒキガエル」への愛情表現である（そりゃあ1500匹余の個体識別をして研究していればいやでも愛着がわきますよね）。争わないとはいっても、ヒキガエルに食われるミミズや昆虫などの小動物にしてみれば阿鼻叫喚の地獄図ではあるわけだ。
　生物にはそれぞれに固有の繁殖・生存方法があり、その種においては長い試行錯誤の果てにとりあえずはベターな方策として今それは選択されている。したがって異種間のそれぞれの方策は基本的に等価といえる。どちらのほうが優れているというようなものではない。「適者生存」という言葉は非常に誤解や曲解をうみやすい言葉であるが、人間社会に不用意に恣意的に転用しないかぎり、冷静に考えばごく当たり前のことを言っているにすぎない。そのあたりのことも本書には詳しい。
　欲を言えば現在では実物を見たことのある人は少なくなっているだろうから、本書中にヒキガエルの写真などがいくらかあればもっとよかったと思う。

　帯に、「生物は競争原理だけで生きるにあらず!!」と、競争社会へのアンチテーゼのようなことが書かれてあるのに惹かれ、購入しましたが、読後の感想からすると、結論づけがちょっと強引な気もします。やや地味な観察記録が続き、最終章で急に結論が出されるので。なるほど、ヒキガエルは、しゃかりきに他の個体を押しのけてまでの壮絶な競争をしていないというのは事実のようであり、「全ての生物は、生き残るために競争をしている」という一般的な思いこみに一石を投じる意味はあるのでしょうけど。
　が、全体として、のんびりとした著者のトーンには、ほのぼのとしてしまいます。なんせ、「健康維持と（助教授の地位の）保険のため」ヒキガエルの調査を始めた、なんて書いてしまっているくらいですから。労組の集会で「ストをやるなら、城門を閉ざして籠城してはどうか」と著者が主張したが却下されたなどという、本筋とは関係のないところなどもおかしかったです。
　「お城の大学」・金沢大学も、いまや多くの学部が丸の内、つまりお城の中から、角間という山の中に移転してしまいました。ヒキガエルの産地として、卯辰山などの懐かしい地名が出てくるだけでも、楽しかったです。単なるノスタルジーですけどね。
　真剣に生物学としての論理を求めている方には、少し肩すかしに感じるかもしれません。ただ、旧の城内キャンパスや当時の金沢の町を知る者として、また著者のユーモアあふれる語り口に、私としては楽しめたので、やや甘めではありますが、星４つとします。金沢の町が好きな方や、同大学の卒業生なら、楽しめるでしょう。

A Kid's Review
論文捏造問題が騒がれる今日この頃、「研究」というものを見直すことに通じるのが本書である。そして、1970年代の大学闘争の余波が生み出した好著、ともいえる。
ただ、結局のところ、金沢城内のヒキガエルが絶滅した、ということは、ヒキガエルの生き方は生存競争に関係ないのではなく、大きな意味では生存競争に負けた、ということになるのではないか、というのが私の感じた疑問である。
