本書はスタインベックの最後の作品であり，アメリカ論の集大成です．愛犬チャーリーとの全米旅行で得た洞察を基に，アメリカとアメリカ人の多様性と統一性，開拓精神，政治，人種差別など各テーマ別に考察しています．

「歴史は、いくらか不正確なうえに、何をやったかということしか伝えませんよ。フィクションだと、なぜやったか、そのときどんな気がしたか、どうなふうだったかを伝えますし、また伝えようとするでしょう」

私見では，スタインベックの最後のメッセージは，アメリカとアメリカ人に関する考察ではなく，「国家および国民を知るためには，歴史を読むだけではなく文学をも読み，実際に国家を旅し国民と話すべきだ」ということなのだと思います．

　ノーベル文学賞作家のアメリカ人論である。原作のAmerica and Americansが世に出たのが1966年で、ベトナム戦争の真っ只中であった。アメリカ社会の分裂がピークを迎えるのはもう少し後のことだが、すでにこの時期、アメリカは病んでいた。

　スタインベックは国家を破壊するものとして、安楽さ、豊かさ、安全性を挙げる。豊かさの結果、アメリカは目標を喪失し、ますます「滅びゆく国民」の様相を呈していると見る。しかしスタインベックは、アメリカの活力を最後まで信じているのである。

「われわれは時に失敗し、誤った道をとり、新しく継続するために立ち止まり、腹を満たし、傷口をなめた。しかし絶対にあと戻りはしなかった。絶対に。」

　ここにはアメリカ人に特有の「活力信仰」とも言うべき姿勢が現れているように思う。はるかに長い歴史を持ち、国の栄枯盛衰を記憶に刻んできた他の国の人ならば、運命に対して静かに向き合い、もっと寡黙になるのではないだろうか。

　こうしたアメリカ人の特性は、今も確かに存在している。それはアメリカの強みでもあり弱みでもある。スタインベックはこの両側面、すなわち自己をも破壊してしまうエネルギーと矛盾を乗り越える活力という二面性を鋭く見抜いていた。
