絶滅が危惧される希少種・鼻行類。
ネズミほどの大きさで、鼻を使って移動する（！）この可憐な生き物達を紹介する世紀の奇書。
生活スケッチや解剖図まで含む豊富な図版と、科学者らしい控えめな文体。
指輪物語の冒頭・ホビット庄に関する考証をほうふつとさせる面白さです。
本好き、生物好き、冒険好きの手元に、時間や空間を超えて届けられるこの作品。秘蔵の書として本棚にそっと置いておくのにふさわしい本です。
そしてときどき、あなたの事をよく理解してくれている人達、あるいは子供達に開いてみせて、この不思議な生き物達について語ってみるのも良いかも。

確かな生物学的知識に根ざした、夢とロマンのファンタジー。子どもの頃に「恐竜図鑑」や「世界の昆虫大図鑑」を夢中でめくって、見たこともない動物に憧れた、あのワクワク感を思い出せる！ 生態学や形態学、動物行動学など、マクロな生物学をマニアックに学んだ人をも満足させる大傑作です。

ナソベーマリリクムについて初めて知ったのはある心理学のムックの挿絵で見たときでした。つぶらな瞳と長い鼻、リボンのような尻尾。以来わたしはナソベーマリリクムのことが気になってしかたなく、いみなくその絵を落書きしていたものでした。５年経ったあるひ、書店でこの本を発見したのでした！やっぱりあれはただのイラストではなかったのだ！そう思いこの本を読み再び混乱。あまりに学術的な内容にただただ唖然。でもハイアイアイ島には惹かれました。行って見たい。あーでもなんか納得できないような、納得できるような・・・これが本当なら将来家で飼えることだけを楽しみに信じて待ってます。
