なるほど、そうだったのか！漢字の語源に関してミステリーの謎解きのように知的な刺激に満ちた発見が随所に盛り込まれた学術書。著者は立命館大学名誉教授。先日96才で逝去した。学歴は尋常小学校卒。働きながら夜間の教育課程を経て大学教授になった異色の経歴であるが、漢字研究の第一人者として評価されている。
漢字の語源研究ではAC100年（後漢時代）に許慎なる人物が著した研究書「説文解字」が千数百年にわたって権威ある聖典として君臨する存在であったが、著者はその聖典に赤点をつけた。許慎の研究の主な元資料は秦時代の文字・篆文であるが、BC221年に秦が全国制覇する1,000年以上も前：殷時代BC1,300年頃に生まれた中国最古の文字＝甲骨文字・金文の存在を知らなかったという致命的な問題点を指摘したのだ。
研究内容の奥の深さや独創性は、例えば、次のような文字解説に示されている。
「道の古い字形は首を携えて進む形〜知られざる神霊の支配する世界に入るためには最も強力な呪的力能によって、身を守ることが必要であった。そのためには、虜囚の首を携えて行くのである。道とは、その俘馘の呪能によって導かれ、うち開かれるところの血路である」

この本が名に負う白川静・藤堂明保・論争のきっかけになったものである。私は父が中国語を教えることを職業とし、藤堂・NHK・中国語会話番組を昔、常に父親といっしょに見せられていたし、血筋も三重県・伊賀・上野と同じであるから、藤堂派になるべきなのだろう。でも正直、両者ともに尊敬はしていても、疑問に思うことが両者ともにある。例を上げよう。本書（平凡社のもの）の229ページ。「南」の字の象形は、卜文・金文では銅鼓形の楽器を繋げた形だと白川はいう。白川は「南」の象形がこれ一つだけだと考えているのだろうか。前後の文章からはそう判断できるが、仮に象形解釈がト・金文から複数だとしても、複数ならいくつあるのか？しかし、理論上は象形解釈は無限個数あるのではないか？たまたまト・金文でその中の１つが話題になったのでは？　ト・金文の一個（または複数）という象形解釈の数をいったい誰が保証してくるれるのか？ト・金文は事象のすべてを網羅できるスーパー辞書なのか。もしそうであるなら、ト・金文に一億ページの分量があってもまだ足りないのでは？漢字の分量を無視している点では藤堂も白川と大同小異ではないのか？彼らの戦いは所詮、釈迦の手の中にある。目の前の相手を打ち負かすのにお互い気を取られすぎて、もっと俯瞰された、世界に開かれていたはずの、記号論としての漢字のような見方がかけていないか？中国人や西洋人を含む、すべての世界の人が漢字を見たらどう解釈するかである。ヒエログリフとしての漢字である。このことが知りたければ、「宇宙に開かれた光の劇場」上野和男・著という本を読むことをお薦めする。この本はフェルメール論としての体裁をなしている。この本を読めば、少なくとも漢字検定だけが大手をふるう、うんざりするような今の日本の文化状況に対するストレス解消にはなると思わないか？手前味噌でお粗末でした。
