この本は倫理について語っているが、「善く生きる」という意味での倫理ではない。この本が言いたいのは「人間は理性的であればあろうとするほど、結果的に残酷な結果を招く」という、ありふれた認識である。しかし、倫理とは、そこから脱却するために聖人になることではなく、そういった人間の条件を生きぬくことにほかならない。これほど、きびしい認識や生き方というものはないような気がする。最近、「自然に生きることが心をいやしてくれる」などというまさに阿片のようなセラピー本が多いが、そういう本が馬鹿げて見えるほど、「倫理２１」は本質的な部分で違っている。
