本書はコンピュータ(ワープロ)による日本語表記の制限、特にグローバル・スタンダードとして採用されようとしているUnicodeによる制限に対し危機感を持っている編者が、作家、種々の分野の研究者、そして開発者側の座談会を通してこの問題を訴えたもの。実は私はソフトウェア開発者なので、肩身の狭い思いで本書を読んだ。

作家の座談会では、コンピュータ(ワープロ)を使わないという方もいたが、使用する方は、とにかく表記できる文字の制限を無くして欲しいという切実な訴えが出た。自身の書く作品は勿論の事、過去の古典と呼ばれる作品の一部が表記できないのだから深刻な問題だ。

各分野の研究者(例えば地名研究)達の意見も作家の方とほぼ同様で、特に研究成果をデータベースで管理している方の声は深刻で、コンピュータの決め事で研究に支障が出るのはケシカランと言うごもっともな意見。

次いで開発者の立場から意見が出されるが、コンピュータによる日本語表記のために我々はこれ程頑張って来たと言う歴史の紹介が主で、今後の明確な展望が打ち出せていないのが同業者としても残念。Unicodeに捉われない日本独自の姿勢を積極的に打ち出して行く必要性があるのではないか。

最後に江藤淳氏と白川静氏の特別対談があり、日本人が漢字とどう係ってきたか、文学作品を中心に語られる。

本書を通じて、日本語を使う我々が"従"、コンピュータが"主"になっている現状を改めて思い知らされる。私自身、文章を書く際、"カナ漢字変換"で出て来ない漢字は使わない習慣が身に付いてしまっている。こうした問題を多くの方が憂慮しているにも係らず、明確な打開策が打ち出せていない現状に本当に危機感を覚えた。

文字鏡研究会、「言語、認識、表現」研究会、Muleのメンバを入れてもらえれば、違う視点を提供できたかもしれない。

漢字については本場の中国に先んじて文字鏡研究会が標準化と電子辞書作りに貢献してきたし、中国の標準化委員会に対しても情報提供してきた。

そういった日本の優位な立場をもっと認識して、すでに岐路を曲がっていることを著者らが認識してもらえると嬉しかった。

国立言語研究所の外来語のカタカナ表記の読替も、機械翻訳ソフトのプログラマ達からの提案であることを知る人は少ないかもしれない。

ちいさなことの積み上げが文化を創っていくのだと思う。
