5.0 out of 5 stars 南伸坊が手掛けた装丁がこんなにあった！, 2001/5/4
　最近では著名人の物まねパフォーマンスとか、『車内で平然と化粧する脳』などの科学者との対談集で話題になることが多い南伸坊だが、本書は、彼本来の仕事である本の装丁という仕事の舞台裏を紹介する「装丁こぼれ話」集。思いついたことが、なし崩し的にそのまんま装丁になっていくプロセスが、自然体の口調でのんびり語られてゆく楽しい本だ。カラーで再現されている彼の手がけた作品を見てゆくと、B5サイズの『ねじ式　つげ義春作品集』とか、竹内薫の『シュレディンガーの猫』など、気づかぬうちに彼が装丁した本をずいぶん目にしていたことに驚かされた。アメリカン・ペーパーバックの表紙画に魅せられた片岡義男は『半分は表紙が目的だった』というタイトルの本を出しているが、『芭蕉の誘惑』（嵐山光三郎）などは、まさしく表紙を見ただけで手もとに置いておきたくなるぐらいの魅力がある。ちなみに、本書のカバーでは、南伸坊その人がいかにも職人然とした姿で登場していい味を出している。帯をとってご鑑賞いただきたい。

装丁家と名乗ると、ちょっと立派すぎる。おそらく「家」が立派なので、私は単に「装丁」ということにする。こうすれば馬丁、園丁みたいでちょっと職人ぽくていい……こんな書き出しで始まる本書は、あの南伸坊が、ブックデザインした作品をあれこれ取り上げながら、制作のアイディアや作業経緯のこぼれ話などを気ままに語ったもの。作品の紹介ページはすべてカラーで、手ぬぐい、新聞紙、豆腐、ホーロー看板……どことなくレトロな香りのする身近な素材が多いようだ。気取らない人柄がにじみ出ている、やさしい文章もいい雰囲気。「読んで学ぶ」というよりも、「見て楽しむ」一冊である。
