まだ読んでいないなら、午前中から読み始めて寝るまでに
読み切ってしまうことをオススメします。
途中でやめて眠ろうとしても、眠れないこと請け合いだからです。
追われている緊迫感がずっとつきまとい、身も心もドラマの中に
飲み込まれていくような感覚を覚えます。
はっと我に返って自宅にいることに気づいたときのなんとも言えない
安堵と寂寥。

人々の苦悩と切望をきっちりシンクロさせてくれる、魂を揺るがすような
名作だと思います。

これはグレン・ミードの２作品目になります。とにかく『最高です！』の一言でしょう。1953年に米において、極秘扱された超機密プロジェクト「スノウ・ウルフ」そこに関わる人物描写がなんとも複雑にして繊細なのです。絶対の共産主義から脱出を試みる美女アンナ、それを気にするCIA局員マッシュ、黒豹なる暗殺者スランスキー。この三者の人間模様も楽しめるでしょう。そして、舞台は世界をも巻き込みつつあるのです。徹夜で読み通すべきでしょう。

　第２次世界大戦後間もなくのアメリカの極秘プロジェクトの詳細を、当事者の息子が当事者の生き残りの一人から聞くという形式で構成されている。そのため、作品中の「現在」は冒頭と巻末にあるだけで、あとは４０年以上前の話として展開される。この形式が作品に奥深さを与えている。
　前述のとおり、作品の大部分は大戦後間もなくのソビエトとアメリカの工作戦である。極寒のソビエトで繰り広げられる内容は、息もつかさぬテンポで展開する。アメリカの送り込んだエージェントとそれを阻止しようとするソビエトKGB特使（この二人の関係は後半明かされるが、感のいい方なら前半部分でわかってしまうのが残念）。ついにはアメリカ側の工作員はアメリカからも追われることになる。
　スターリンの死亡には謎が多く、史実をベースとしてこの作品が書かれたということであるが、この作品の内容に近いことがあったとしても決して不思議ではないと思わせるだけの説得力があった。しかし、昨今の世界状況を見てみても、共産主義／社会主義と独裁国家は紙一重と感じます。この作品の舞台となった時代のソビエト上層部がやっていたことは、ナチスよりひどいのでは？
