地下鉄や駅の構造を中心に，著者が不可解だと考える点をリストアップする構成なのだけれど，謎を投げかけるばかりで結論がほとんど無い（この本に限らず関連シリーズ全てがそうだ）．そもそも「謎」として提起した項目が著者の妄想と拙い想像力，脆弱な証拠に立脚しているので，問題設定自体が適切なのかどうかがまず怪しい．百歩譲って，その問題が“謎”として成立するとしても，その後のアプローチもまた致命的だ．大した調査もせず証拠も挙げずに「…だろう」「…なのではないか？」と想像上の勝手な解釈を付け，結論に至らぬまま終わる項目がほとんど．非常に脆い“証拠”を基礎に議論を展開し，その上にいくつもの仮説を積み上げるので，最初の証拠がグラつくと後はもう目を覆わんばかりの勢いで議論全体が崩壊して行く．このサマはある意味で見事だ．逆にこの過程が見モノかもしれない．そうか，それを楽しむ本なのかもしれない．

マニアックな方にしてみると少々物足りないかもしれませんし、

謎な部分も多く、筆者の推測が多くかかれている部分もあります。

しかし、大概のことは東京で生活している人にとっても知らない事実ですし、

単純に「地下」というものにフォーカスした本として興味がつきません。

その「地下」への第一歩としてとてもおもしろい視点の本だと思います。

初心者には是非！皇居周辺の地下4階に昔の江戸の街がある・・なんておもしろいじゃないですか。

この本は著者も述べているとおり、これまで著者が出してきた本の集大成である。私も読んできたが、目新しい事実はない。むしろ、取材上の壁がいろいろあって、謎の解明が進んでいないことをうかがわせる。関係者からの情報提供もあるのだろうが、新たな事実を示すのはなかなか難しいのだろう。今後の著者の健闘を期待したい。ただ、東京の歴史や鉄道に興味ある人にとっては、コンパクトにまとまった本だと思う。
