深い。それがこの３巻である。表面をなぞれば、単なる「まあまあ出来のいいSFコミック」ということになろう。しかし、その背後には、作者の多分野にわたる深い知識と、何より人類の存在そのものの意味をダイナミックに、鋭く、叙情豊かに問うパワフルな哲学がある。何度読んでも感動しないではいられない究極の名作の１つ、心のバイブルである。唯一、「なぜ自分にこのレベルの創造ができないのか」そう強く自問してしまう点が最大の欠点といえる。まったく素晴らしいの一言に尽きる最強のSFコミックである。

映画「２００１年宇宙の旅」の世界を更に時代を進ませ、人類と宇宙開発の意味を鋭く世に問うＳＦ漫画の傑作。

類人猿が道具を使い文明の扉を開き、猿による宇宙実験から人類の宇宙開発がはじまり、遂に太陽系最果てに位置する人類禁断の惑星「悪魔星（ルシファー）」の反物質を利用して小型ブラックホールを誕生させ、このエネルギーを利用して人類は無限の宇宙に旅立っていくが・・・

様様な星間で繰り広げられるアクシデント、人間模様、そして人類は本来の存在意義を知り、母なる地球へと帰還する・・・・

この深遠にして余りにも広大なテーマに挑み、成功している作品。
宇宙に思いを馳せるとともにこの作品で人類とは、自分とは・・を見つめ直すのも一興かと。

星野之宣さんは、宇宙戦艦や巨大ロボット、モビルスーツやモーターヘッドが戦闘を繰り広げるようなマンガを除けば、宇宙モノのSFマンガの第一人者と言っていいだろう。

『2001夜物語』も宇宙をテーマにしたSF短編集だが、それぞれのストーリーは関連したものが多く、オムニバスと考えていい。

物語として印象に残るのは、ページ数も多い第８夜「悪魔の星」あたりだろうか。ところどころに散りばめられたミルトンの『失楽園』の言葉が効果的だ。

第３夜「豊饒の海」はわずか20ページの佳作。鶴田謙二の初期の作品を集めた『SF名物』（講談社）には「豊饒の月」というこの作品のパロディが収録されていて、ちょっと笑える。

小説では味わえないマンガならではの傑作シーンは、第19夜「緑の星のオデッセイ」の星間種子（スター・シード）を飛ばす植物の造形だ。

科学の進歩が加速されている現代では、SFマンガの寿命も短くなっている。

星野さんは、「古くならないものはただひとつ人間のドラマだろうと考え、そこに重点を置くことを心がけた」と文庫版『残像』のあとがきで述べているが、『2001夜物語』もそのような思いをもって描かれているのだろう。

20年前の作品でありながら、古さは感じられない。

星野さんのSFで宇宙モノと双璧をなすテーマといえば恐竜モノだ。

『ブルー ホール』や『ブルー・ワールド』で描かれる太古の世界は生命に満ちあふれている。

著者にとって恐竜モノは、無機的な宇宙空間での物語にたいしていいバランスをもたらしてくれる存在なのかもしれない。
