マンガでも文学でもなんでもそうだが、名作と呼ばれる力のある作品は、闇が宿っているので、読むのが苦し場合が多い。ナルシシズム的な単純な癒しを、拒否するからでしょう。だから、すばらしい作品ではあるが、正直言って、精神的に疲れた。猟奇殺人専門のFBI捜査官が書いた『FBI心理分析官』の序文にあったニーチェの闇を覗き込むものは、闇から覗き込まれていることを注意せよ」といった内容の言葉を、思い出した。この作品の感覚は、メジャー級に支持されるものではないと思う。ただし、その感覚的なモノ以外は、猟奇殺人モノのサスペンスやミステリーとしてメジャー級だった。

読み方としては、「猟奇殺人もののミステリー」としても「言葉を持たない純粋な子供が世界を獲得する物語」としても読める。だから、ミステリーとしては一級品だと思います。犬と一緒に育てられて言葉を持たない犬男である「トト」が言葉を理解し世界を獲得する過程と同時並行で、言葉を獲得することで彼の記憶の中にある「ある事件の像」が、パズルをくみ上げるように出来上がっていく。読者としては、その二つを同時に味わえる。他の評者が、『羊たちの沈黙』のレクター博士が子供を育てたらこうなるのではないか、と言っていたが、けだし納得。僕的には、黒澤清監督の映画『CURE』を強烈に惹起させられた。
