「いけちゃんとぼく」にやられてしまい、
再びサイバラの本を購入。
間違いない、この人は天才だ。
今まで気づかなかったことが悔やまれる。
世間では既に評価されているはずなのに、マンガというだけで私の守備範囲に入ってこなかった。
しかも、サイバラは多分に誤解されている。
シリアスさとのバランスをとっているのか、照れ隠しなのかは知らないが、ハードな面ばかりが強調されている。

周囲を冷静に認識する女生徒を描き、アイデンティティーが確立していく過程をシビアに見せつける
「はれた日は学校を休んで」
男の子の友情を明るいトーンで笑わせる
「」やまもとくんとまぶだち」
ジョンと名付けた犬を通して、子どもが死の意味を知る
「ジョン」

どれもこれも素晴らしい。
言うことなし。

自分も実を言うと、学校に対して良い思い出がなく、登場人物めぐみちゃんに感情移入しながら、懐かしい気持ちになりました。
そして、当時、自分もめぐみちゃんのように不器用で、両親や先生や友達を傷つけてしまったこともありましたが、この本に出会ったことで、そうした罪を犯してしまった自分の過去さえも、決して無駄な否定される思い出ではなかったんだと思えて、元気をもらいました。
なんだか、同窓会で、学生当時の親友に再会し、二次会で酒を交わしながら、積もる話をしているような気持ちにさせられます。

あと、最後のジョンという犬と少年の物語が、切なくて、哀しくて、涙が出てきてしまいました。
近年のペットブームで、飼い主と犬の関係を上辺だけの奇麗事ばかりが先行してメディアで宣伝される中、こうしたペットを飼うことによって、遅かれ早かれ直面しなければならない現実を赤裸々に描いた残酷な物語ですが、少年がジョンの介護・世話を通して、今まで自分のことしか考えていなかった子供時代から精神的にも成長し、ジョンに無償の愛を注いでいく姿に、希望を見出しました。

他のエピソードもそうですが、この本には、共同体から見捨てられてしまった社会的弱者に対して、赤裸々に残酷な現実を描きつつも、奇麗事・偽善なんかじゃなく、その人たちのことを決して見捨てない優しさ・ささやかな救いを感じました。

いじめられていた頃に、初めて読んだ。
泣くことなんかできなくなっていた自分だったけれど、何か、許された気持ちになった。

環境が変わり、泣くことも笑うこともできるようになった今、久々に手にとったこの作品はやっぱり心に沁みた。

この本は、忘れようとしていることを、無理やりにでも引きずり出されるから、読んでいる間と読んだあとは本当に本当に痛い。
だけど、これは逃げちゃいけない痛みだから、読んでみて。
