夏目漱石の「坊ちゃん」から始まったこのシリーズの最後は、やはり夏目漱石である。そして、取り上げられたのは、漱石が伊豆で大喀血し危篤に陥ったいわゆる「修善寺の大患」のである。漱石はこの時、３０分死んだそうである。

第５部では、この３０分の間に漱石が見た夢（死ぬ直前に自分の一生が走馬灯のように甦るというやつか？）を中心に物語が進んでいく。夢には今まで登場してきた人物が印象深い姿で登場してくる。本当に、シリーズと明治という時代の最後を飾るに相応しい作品である。

‘８６年に始まったこのシリーズがここまでくるのに１２年かかっている。当然、谷口ジローの絵柄も変化している。連載当時の彼の絵柄は、今までの劇画的な荒々しいものから、繊細な絵柄に変化していく過程にあり、まだ劇画的な気配が残っていたのだが、シリーズが完結する頃には現在の絵柄に落ち着いている（私はどの時期の絵柄も好きである）。

私は、元気な漱石と躍動感溢れる物語である１作目は連載当時の絵柄で書かれ、危篤に陥った漱石が描かれた静謐な作品である５作目が現在の繊細な絵で描かれたことは、結果的に良かったのではないかと思う。

このシリーズは、谷口ジローと関川夏央のどちらか一方が欠けても成立することは考えられない、黄金コンビの集大成に相応しい傑作である。単行本と気軽に読める文庫本の両方が販売されているが、谷口ジローの絵の魅力は単行本で味わうべきだと思う。しかし、文庫本も、高橋源一郎等による解説が素晴らしいので捨てがたい。

　まさしく『坊ちゃんの時代』。
　あの時代、多くの魅力ある人材がうごめいていた。それを　全員　登場させ、あの時代を生き返させんとした野望。脚本の関川 夏央、そしてそれを画として完成させていった谷口ジロー。気の遠くなる話し。特に、絵にしていった谷口ジローはいかにしんどかったかと想像する。逃げないで、ついに完成させたのだ。実に12年間の長い年月がかかった。「未知の世界」に挑戦し続ける、粘り強さ、感性、創作力。
　私は　この作品にであったとき驚愕した。既存の「漫画」とは異なるジャンルの出現と感じた。
　二人は　新しき物作りにおのれの人生の一番元気な時をかけた。こうして　私たちは　日本国で最高の作品と出会う幸せをえることができた。
　関川 夏央と谷口ジローが作り上げた　過去の「日本漫画」を止揚した「宇宙」の登場。（これを　感動といわずして何を感動といえるのか。）日本国で　これ以上の　「創造物」にまだ会ったことはない。日本に新しい文化が誕生したのだ。このことを確認し、二人の創作者に　感謝したい。世には偉大な人物がいるものだ。
　しかし、今の時代と『坊ちゃんの時代』を対比し、これからどう生きるかは我らが、見つけねばならないと迫られているようでもある。
