1951年東京都生まれ。95年『地下鉄に乗って』で吉川英治文学新人賞を受賞。97年『鉄道員』で直木賞、2000年『壬生義士伝』で柴田錬三郎賞、06年『お腹召しませ』で中央公論文芸賞、および司馬遼太郎賞を受賞。また、08年には『中原の虹』で吉川英治文学賞を受賞した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

幽霊話、因縁話である。
派手な怪談ではなく、
敗残者の哀しみとか逃れられない心の傷をくっきりと浮かび上がらせる、
地味で本格的な怪談集。

ホラー小説として読めるが、
すごーく高級で、
純文学の域に達していると思います。
押さえて、押さえた描写の中に描かれる、
一瞬の感情の放出が、
アメリカ小説のよう。
浅田次郎の筆力に脱帽。

一番のお勧めは「遠別離」。
戦争と愛情の物語。
最後の場面に涙。

一方、「客人」は男の孤独と過去の記憶に関しての傑作。
最後のシークエンスで、
主人公は「客人」を受入れるのかどうか分からない。
そこが面白いし怖い。

著者は巻末の対談の中で、小説の三要素をあげ、その3つ目を「面白さ」としています。が、本書の7つの短編にはそれが欠けているような気がします。結末ですべてが氷解するというのが著者のパターンなのに、納得できないまま読了しました。
ということで、私にとってはハズレでした。ごめんなさい。
