表紙はガンダムのフルスクラッチだし、タイトルはエヴァンゲリオンのシンジくんを想像させるし、オタクが題材の小説？という印象はどうにも強い。実際、そういった描写はたくさん出てくるし。けど、実はジュブナイル小説だよ、これは。自分の趣味に没頭できる大人たちと、その姿から何かを掴む少年の姿は、エンタテインメントとしてもバッチリだけど、むしろ10代に読んでほしい。

　小説界きってのガンダム通である著者が、ガンダム世代、そしてエヴァ世代に贈る渾身の一作。
　渋沢慎治は14歳。ひ弱で内向的で、何の取り柄もない少年である。そんな彼に目をつけて、同じクラスの小乃木将太、佐野秀一、武田勇の３人組の執拗なイジメが始まっていた。ある日、慎治はいつものように、万引きを命じられる。狙いは人気アニメ「エヴァンゲリオン」のビデオ最新巻。「サンセット」という店で慎治は万引きを決行し、何とか成功したものの、その現場を担任の教師・古池透に目撃されていた。
　古池透は35歳。中学校の英語教師だが、教師としては熱心というよりはどちらかというとやる気のないタイプで、職員室でもおちこぼれと見なされている。彼は慎治の万引きを目撃したときも黙ってやりすごすつもりだったが、ビデオ店の店長から意外な事実を聞かされて、そういうワケにもいかなくなった。万引き被害の多さに耐えかねた店長は店内に防犯ビデオを仕掛けていて、そのビデオを告発のため販売する、というのだ。
　これを阻止するためには、慎治に万引きを認めさせ、弁償されなければならない…。こうして慎治と関わり合うようになった古池は、そこで初めてイジメの実態を知ることになる。
　ガンダムの作品世界とプラモデルの製作をモチーフに、「イジメ」という問題に斬り込んだこの作品は、このほかにも格闘技やサバイバルゲームといった様々な「オタク文化」を盛り込みながら、自分の世界を持つことの大切さ、そしてそこから得られる力を丁寧に描いています。何の取り柄もなかった慎治は教師・古池の「他のだれにも見せたくなかった」というガンプラ製作の世界に誘われ、初めて夢中になれるものを見つけます。そのとき、逃げてばかりいた慎治の中に、「イジメ」に立ち向かう力がわいてくる…。読むだけで元気になれる一冊です。
