Ｊリーグ以前はあたかも語るべき歴史が存在しなかったのように語られることの多い日本のサッカー界ですが、今回はＪリーグ以前のこれまでは語られることのなかったいくつものエピソードが満載です。まず最初はキリンと日本サッカー協会の不思議な因縁が当事者の証言によって語られます。一橋大学サッカー部閥をとしての奇妙な因縁とキリンカップに結実するその後の幸運な関係は偶然の重要さと当事者のぶれることのない哲学の重要性を物語ります。第二は本田というサッカー界ではそれなりの存在を持っていたチームのＪリーグへの不参加をめぐる背後の事情が解明されます。真実は完全に明らかにされることはありませんが、本田という会社の地域貢献についてのユニークな考え方がここでは示唆されます。３番目は、ビタヤ・ラオハックルというタイの選手の日本との不思議な関わりが当人の回想によって語られます。彼のヤンマーでのプレーを最初に見たときの驚きは今でも忘れませんが、ビタヤ選手がどういう経緯でヤンマーというチームに加入したのかは私にとってはずっと謎でした。その後のドイツへの移籍への経緯をも含めて、今回の特集でわかりました。「東京ヴェルディに未来はあるか」は、ある程度想像された内容でしたが、サッカーに関わる人々の利権をめぐるさまざまな思惑を示唆する内容ですが、哲学と愛情が欠落し利権のみが前面に出てきた場合には、チームなるものがいかに脆く崩壊してしまうのかのケーススタディになっています。
