今まで、自衛隊は弱いと思っていました。最近、中国の軍拡や領海侵犯で国防に対する不安もあって、自衛隊（国防）のことが気になっていました。そこで、本書を購入。「こんなに強い」っていうけど本当かな？って半信半疑でした。最初に、日本の近隣諸国の軍事状況（かなり緊迫しているみたいです）が説明してあって、次の章からは自衛隊は「軍隊」か？のレッスン１から陸→海→空の順で作戦、兵器、「軍隊」としての強さが解説してありました。下段に注や写真があるので、初心者の私にもよくわかりました。同時に日本の国防の弱点もわかりもどかしい気持ちになり、新聞でも軍事や自衛隊に関わる記事を読むようになりました。「国防入門」として最適な本だと思いますよ。

自衛隊は必要不可欠の組織だし、インド洋などに派遣されている隊員には敬意を表するべきと思っているが、そんな私が読んでて気恥ずかしくなるくらい、自衛隊及び隊員を誉めまくっている。自衛隊は決して完全無欠の組織ではない。現実に抱えている様々な問題を解決すべく意見を述べるならわかるが、何故そこから目を逸らして美辞麗句を並べるのか?著者の意図が理解できない。ひょっとしてこの人、自衛隊弱体化を狙っているのでは?そんな下衆の勘ぐりまでしてしまった。

2.0 out of 5 stars 興味深く読むことはできましたが, 2007/6/4
自衛隊の戦力や活動について知らない事実もあり，興味深く読むことができました。特に第6章の領空問題や第7章の自衛隊の民生協力については私の知識不足を補ってくれました。
ただ，自衛隊の戦力分析についてはやや過剰な修飾語がついて回り，何が事実で何が筆者の評価なのかよく分からない点がありました。厳然たる事実のみが意味をなす防衛力について，これでは参考にならないなあと残念です。
また，国防を担う自衛隊に敬意を表するのは当然だと思いますが，筆者の語る言葉は美辞麗句に過ぎ鼻白む場面もありました。
さらに，外交政策や歴史分析については，反対意見に対抗しようという意識が強すぎるのか，筆者の意見をただただ勢いのある言葉で飾っているだけで，やや空虚な言葉の羅列になってしまっています。事実の捉え方も乱暴なものが多いと感じました。ちょっと残念です。
