ホラーとか怪談とかは上田秋成を持ち出すまでもなく、洋の東西、時の古今を問わず文学のジャンルとしては立派な一分野でありまして、私達読者がこれらにひかれるのは「コワイもの見タサ」の知的バージョンである「コワイもの読ミタサ」なんでしょうね。動物の化身のホラーはあちらにも名作があり、エドガー・アラン・ポーの黒猫（集英社文庫）など今でも夜読みたくない本です。　ただ人の霊とか亡者の話になると、私は日本の独壇場だと思います。浅田さんの名をたかめた「鉄道員」は善意のお化けのお話でしたが、「あやし　うらめし　あな　かなし」はゾーとさせられながらも、とげられなかった男と女の想いのいかにも悲しい、哀れななお話で、作者がタイトルの最後にかなしと加えた理由がよくわかります。それぞれ端正な文章で綴られた好個の短編集ですが、私はなかでも「骨の来歴」と「客人」が好きです。
「骨の来歴」―久しぶりに会った高校の同級生の山荘に招かれた私は、彼が異常に年をとっていないことに気づき、やはり独身を通すと違うなと羨ましがります。すると彼は「勝手に決め付けるなよ。俺はずっと昔に結婚しているよ。妻は暗くならないと帰ってこれないから、まあゆっくりしていけ」といいます。それから彼は、私も知っている夭折した高校のマドンナ佐知子との実らなかった恋の顛末を問わず語りに始めます。長い独白を聞き終わるころには私は彼の不思議な若さの秘密に気付き、愕然として山荘を去ろうとしますが、そのとき暗くなった森のかなたから・・・・
もう1篇の「客人」は独身のまま見送った両親のためお盆の迎え火をたく頃、ふとしたことで家に泊めることになった銀座の女が実は・・・という現代版の牡丹灯篭です。三遊亭円朝は恋する女の怨念の恐ろしさをおどろおどろしく語りましたが、浅田さんは果たせなかった青春の日々への男の絶望的な憧れを漂わしてエンドとしています

この人の短編はほんとにうまいなあ。沙高楼奇譚のときと同様に怖いのにああなるほどと思わせる結末に持っていく、ミステリーの香り漂う人情話の数々、いや参りましたね。あっという間に全編を読破してしまい、読後感も良かったです。ぜひ読んでください。ただ、この人の作品は漢字が難しいので、息子は読んで感動してくれましたが、女房には読んでもらえませんでした。

短篇集なので、個々の小説により恐さも異なりますが、私は特に五つ目の短篇の「客人」がすごく恐かったです。小説の世界の音や映像が脳裏をよぎって、まさに総毛立ちました。
日本の土俗的なホラー短篇集で、派手さはないけどひしひしと恐さが身に染みてきます。
著者の小説家としての才能の幅広さを感じました。
