本書は面白い!!
タイトルは「読み方」となっているが、
どうも小説の書き方を書いた本のように思われる。

文章には二種類ある。
こういう指摘は面白いし、言われてみればそのとおり。
プロットを進める文と、主題を説明する文。
プロットが進みながら、主人公の人物が深まっていく文は、
その両方を兼ね備えた技。

ふーん、そういう構造だったのかと
目をひらかれる思いがする。
自分も書いてみたくなった。

この本の趣旨は、

1.小説の『批評』ではなく、
2.前作『本の読み方 スロー・リーディングの実践』の読書対象を小説に特化させた上で、
3.多くの人が「語る」上で役立つような『視点の紹介』

にある。

そしてその『視点』は、動物行動学のアプローチである、「メカニズム」「発達」「機能」「進化」という4つの切り口を拠りどころにしたものだ。
それはとても新鮮でありながら、解説されるとどれも肯けることばかりで、終始興味深い内容だった。
文章はとても判り易く丁寧で巧み。短く削った言葉の中に、濃い内容が込められているように感じる。
未整理で混沌とした自分の頭がスッキリする心地よさを味わうこともでき、私にとって非常に良い出会いだった。著者に感謝したい。

小説を読むのが好きな人は、今より更に楽しい読書体験が味わえるのではないだろうか。
何より、著者本人が心から読書を楽しんでいる様が伺え、その感動を追体験するだけでも、読書の喜びを思い出さずには居れないだろう。

なお、扱われた小説は近代小説9作品で次の通り。
本書を手にする前に、いくつかの作品に触れてみたい方はどうぞ御参考に。

　著者は気負わない。小説は文字どおり「小さく説く」と受け取る。
　三島由紀夫の有名な言葉に「最後の一行が決まらないと小説は書けない」がある。これも事前の組み立ての一法であるが、逆にどこに導かれるか、裏切りの面白さで展開する小説もある。森鴎外の「半日」を題材にした高橋源一郎のパロディー『日本文学盛衰史』中の「本当はもっと怖い『半日』」には考えさせられるものが多く含まれている。
　小説家は、作品の中で登場人物たちに会話をさせるが、かれらは互いに話し合っているように見えながら、当然、本当は想像上の誰か、すなわち読者に向けて語っているのだという。
　もともと鴎外の「半日」は、家庭内の嫁姑のケンカがテーマであり、流麗な雅文体では書けないことから、口語体の小説として執筆された。それを更に先鋭的ポストモダンの作風をもつ高橋源一郎が独自の解釈で欧外の「半日」に漱石まで登場させ、架空の会話をさせている。パロディーながら「誰が」「誰に」語りかけるか、という面白さがある。と言うより「怖い」ほどの魅力である。小説を書く、小説を読む魅力に通じるものだ。
