が、すばらしい。これが第一印象。シェリーの種類、製法はもちろんのこと、当時の文化や歴史的背景、地形などとの“カラミ”までもしっかり記述されているため、読み進むうちの有耶無耶だった知識が整理されていく感じがする。一般の愛飲家に対しての作品であるが内容は非常に濃厚。この道のプロを目指す方も一読の価値あり。また、我々愛飲家にとっては、実際にお店で飲んだシェリーに照らしあわせ読み進む楽しみがある。読んでみてまたシェリーが恋しくなった。
冒頭にもふれたが、文章を書く能力は簡単には身に付かない。著者の知識量、整理力はずば抜けていると思う。このようなすばらしい本を書き上げられる著者にエールを表したい。

「シェリー酒」というタイトルながら、冒頭で著者がその呼び方をいきなり否定するところ...。深そうだ。これが最初の印象。

読み進むうちに「何からできてるの？ワインの一種？」とだれもが思う疑問から「（仮性）産膜性酵母」（...。）までの難問を名探偵~著者が次から次へと解明していくのが気持ちいい。知的好奇心。読み進むうちに著者の知りたい、伝えたいという気持ちを感じる。

ふと、自分のあるソフトウェア業界との比較をしたくなった。「シェリー」の歴史とは比較にならない若い業界だ。ソフトウェアを早く、安く、高品質に製造するのが生産側のゴールとされる。「シェリー」にも経験則に培われた製造・熟成プロセスがある。「シェリー」は早く作れるのだろうか？化学を駆使して一瞬で、安価で1800年代のものを...？そんな「シェリー」飲みたくない。
物の価値って複雑だ。本書の巻末に美しく並ぶボトルを眺めながら（もちろん飲みながらのほうがいいだろうけど）、再考してみるのもいいかもしれない。
