現在の日本の精神風土の原型は、すでに敗戦直後に存在していた。２１世紀の日本を建設していくうえで、東京裁判や占領下での言論統制の具体的内容、憲法制定時の経緯は、日本人として、知らなくてはならない歴史的事実である。とても分かりやすく、当時の情景が描かれている。「賢者は歴史に学ぶ」というように、過去の歴史を学ぶことで、未来の見取り図が見えてくる。その意味で、近代日本史を学ぶとしたら、岡崎氏のこのシリーズを最適の書としてお勧めしたい。

陸奥宗光、小村寿太郎、幣原喜重郎、重光葵＆東郷茂徳（合本）につづく岡崎久彦さんの「外交官とその時代」シリーズの５冊めにして完結となる著作。日本の近代史を俯瞰するには格好のシリーズだ。ポツダム宣言受諾から占領下の７年間にあって、天皇、軍、憲法をめぐる政府とＧＨＱとの駆引き、それが今日に及ぼす問題を厳しく衝いている。現憲法にかかる幣原の苦悩のくだりは涙を誘った。吉田茂に対する著者の評価は、かなり辛い。
