タイトルにいつわりなく、仏像のことがよくわかります。知っているようで、知らない仏像。日本人なら、仏像は誰でも見たことがあるでしょうが、種類や由来、ポーズの意味、顔の意味など、今まで知りたいと思ったことが、全て書かれていました。仏像初心者である私にとっては、とてもわかりやすく、仏像を見る楽しみが増えました。イラストも豊富で、わかりやすかったです。中国やインドの文化にもふれ、仏像の多様性も、きれいに整理されて書かれていました。著者の仏像に対する理解の深さが感じられました。読みものとしてもとても面白いので、仏教に興味のない人でも楽しめると思います。

昨今、空前の仏像ブーム到来ですが、私は職業柄、仏像と接する機会が多く、個人的な趣味もあいまってこの本を手にしました。
文庫本だし、気軽に読めるかも、と思ったら内容濃っ。
初心者には、「仏像のひみつ」や「続仏像のひみつ」のように、絵入りのキレイな本や、写真を多用した本をオススメしたいところですが、内容的にはこの本にかなうものはなかなかないかも、デス。
確かに文章量が多く、イラストも数ある仏像本よりは少ないかもしれませんが、ともかく内容が充実しています。文章もわかりやすいです。
ちょっと仏像鑑賞のお供に…というのなら、上記のような別の本をオススメします。ちょっとした役割や、脇侍が誰か、持物が何か、みたいなことだけなら絵が多い方がピンときやすいですし。
でも、仏像のみならず、仏教そのものについて、また如来・菩薩・明王・天などなどの、本来の姿、ヒンドゥ教時代のエピソードなど、ちょっと細かい、オタクめいた話や、仏教の世界観（宇宙）の話まで踏み込みたいのなら、こちらの本をオススメします。
色々な仏像本に手を出しましたが、結局最後にはこの本に戻ってきちゃいます。
（内容濃すぎて、何回も読み返してます。）
