漫画論をうたった本は世の中にいくつかありますが、日本人以外の者が語った本としては異色でしょう。 漫画を漫画で語るというスタイルですが、必要にして十分な内容が語られています。 ただ、日本の漫画の取り上げ方としては、引用されている作品がちょっと古すぎるように 思いました。あと、この著者の挙げる漫画の定義の中に、一コマ漫画が入っていないのは、 ちょっと独自の視点かも、という印象を持ちました。

　平成１４年度実施の指導要領（中学校美術・高等学校専門教育美術）に「漫画」が初めて本文中に記述されることになりました。また、２０００年度教育白書でも「漫画は日本の文化である」とうたわれています。時代はここまできました。明治図書の学習指導要領早わかり解説「中学校・新美術科授業の基本用語辞典」の８８ページ「漫画・イラストレーション」の解説で、このマクラウド『マンガ学』が「東西のマンガを比較し、日本のマンガ表現の特異性について興味深い視点をあげている」と紹介されています。マンガでマンガを解説してある本なので、専門的な分析もわかりやすく読めます。マンガ研究の基礎文献です。

　英語版で読んだけど、これ、べつに研究書なんかじゃないよ。それとも、中味が日本語版は違うのか？　しょっぱなから、おまえみたいな若造がマンガを語るかよ、とか、友だちに言われたりして。マンガの定義をしようとして、小うるさい連中に、さんざん突き回されたり。けっこうおもしろいぞ。
　第一話は、マンガは連続コマだ、という話。第二話は、マンガは省略だ。第三話は、連続コマの分析。第四話は、時間制。第五話は、背景や画線や漫符。第六話は、絵とセリフの関係。第七話は、マンガを描く６ステップ。第八話は、色。
　第三話がいちばんよく引用されるところ。それ以外は、あれもこれも言及するのにいっぱいで、あんまり話にまとまりが無い。だから、そういうややこしいことより、マンガについて考えようとして、苦悩している主人公のマンガ、として読んだ方が健全じゃないの？　そういう意味では、ちゃんとマンガになってるし。
