沢山の本を見ましたが、これが一番気に入っています。「ファッションの歴史を知っておきたい」「服飾の用語、コレクションの歴史等について知りたい」という方にお薦めです。古代オリエントから２０世紀末まで、分かりやすい文章で解説されています。どのページにも、彫刻、絵画、写真の美しい資料が掲載されてあり、巻末には両面四つ折の年表が付いて、感動しました。有名人の写真や肖像画もあり、絵画の資料としても重宝しています。歴史の勉強にもなりました。

個人的に、どうしても中世のデザインの資料が欲しかったのですが、なかなか思うようなものが無かった時にこの本に出会いました。豊富なイラストと写真で、当時の洋服の造りが良く分かります。只、残念なのは、絵画などが資料に取り入れられている為、胸元の装飾などが隠れてしまうポーズのモノなどがあることです。それでも、幅広く服飾の歴史を知りたい方には是非お勧めの一冊です。

ヨーロッパの服飾を時代ごとにまとめています。図柄も豊富で、文章を読まなくても楽しめます。クリノリンやバッスル、髪の毛を高く結い上げたりコルセットで締め上げたりと流行というものは本当にその時代ならではのものだと感じました。少し昔の流行だった厚底ブーツやルーズソックスも、未来の人間に「この時代の流行面白い！」と思われる日がくるのでしょう(もうきてるかも？)。1つだけ不満なのは、貴族の衣装が中心で一般の人々の衣装が少ないこと。それ以外は満足の一冊でした。
