藤城 清治
1924年4月17日、東京生まれ。40年慶応大学経済学部予科に入り、パレットクラブに入部。43年15期海軍予備学生として、滋賀海軍航空隊に入隊、翌年少尉。47年慶応義塾大学経済学部卒業。セミプロの人形と影絵の劇場「ジュヌ・パントル」を結成。東京興行に入社。50年最初の影絵の絵本「ぶどう酒びんのふしぎな旅」を暮しの手帖社から出版。51年テアトル東京を辞める。52年人形と影絵の劇場「ジュヌ・パントル」を「木馬座」と改名。54年影絵劇「泣いた赤鬼」が東京都児童演劇コンクール奨励賞を受賞。56年影絵劇「銀河鉄道の夜」で国際演劇祭参加読売児童演劇祭奨励賞、日本ユネスコ協会連盟賞受賞。80年影絵劇「シャクンタラー姫」で厚生省児童福祉文化奨励賞受賞。82年影絵劇「銀河鉄道の夜」で文化庁芸術祭の優秀賞受賞。83年絵本「銀河鉄道の夜」でチェコスロバキアの国際絵本原画展BIBの金のリンゴ賞受賞。89年紫綬褒章授章。93年エキスポ大賞受賞。95年勲四等旭日小綬章授章。97年エキスポ地球振興賞受賞。99年日本児童文芸家協会より児童文化特別功労賞受賞。2001年ジャパンエキスポ大賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

藤城清治さんの版画には、自然への愛、音楽への愛が溢れています。木々の葉一枚一枚を自分で切り抜く、気の遠くなるほど精密な作業の果てに生み出された影絵の数々は、言葉では言い表せないような美しさを持っています。「光と影の詩人｣という名にふさわしい、暖かな光を誰よりも愛している影絵作家だと思います。この画集には、最近の色鮮やかな作品ばかりでなく、藤城さんが影絵を作り始めてまもない1950、60年代の、まだ白黒だったりする影絵も含まれていて、そうした点でも大変貴重なものだと思います。藤城さんの影絵を眺めるのに、難しい理屈は必要ありません。ただ眺めているだけで、影絵はこの世界には私たちが見落としている美しいものがまだこれほど存在するのだということを伝えてくれます。

　いつだったか立ち寄った書店で偶然藤城清治さんの展示会を観て以来、ずっと
欲しかった画集です。高額ですが、装丁や印刷の再現力は素晴らしく、制作年度
順に並んだ影絵はいずれも美しく感動的です。
　1950年代から2000年までの影絵が一ページに一作品、または２、３作品と掲載
され、巻末にはそのすべてに御自身による解説が付いています。

　長い年月をかけ創作されてきた影絵のモチーフは小人の音楽隊、猫、子供、
空飛ぶ馬、宗教、夢、森などほぼ同一のテーマです。どちらかというと光よりも
影の部分が強く、神秘的で、影絵の小人たちの演奏会は夜空に光る星の下、人間の
知らない時間に開催され…といった趣で、年代によってその表現力は力強くなっていきます。

　戦後美しいものを探し光を求めて影絵をみつけたというスタートから現在まで、
変わらず空想を愛し、光と影に人生を見いだすその創作姿勢に改めて感銘を受けました。

　止まっている影絵の静謐な世界は不思議と暖かく感傷的な気分にさせます。
　書棚から大幅にはみ出して保存には難儀しますが、大切な宝物です。
