通りかかった本屋さんで見かけて、タイトルと表紙、そしてちょっと変わった経歴の著者に惹かれて買いましたが、第一章から話に惹き込まれて、一気に最後まで読んでしまいました。最近流行りの数あるファンタジーものとは違います。頭の中で映画を観ているように登場人物や景色が描けるのは、自らヨーロッパを歩き回り、森や海の生活を体験した著者の熱意の表れです。６千年前という設定は話としておもしろいだけでなく、人間がどのように自然と関わっていくべきかを改めて考えさせてくれます。読み終わったあとの満足感は、子どもの頃に冒険物語を読んだ時のような純粋なものでした。原書には「多くの人が読みたいと願っていたのに、これまで読めなかった本」とタイム誌がコメントしていますが、その通りだと思います。

悪霊に憑かれた巨大なクマが、主人公の少年の父を襲います。一族からも離れ、父子二人きりで暮らしていた少年は、一人で、父との誓いを果たすために、「精霊の山」を探す旅に出ることになります。案内役は、仔オオカミ、旅の連れは少女。主人公は、「だれも見たことのない山を見つけなくちゃいけなくて、だれにも答えのわからないなぞなぞを解かなくちゃいけなくて、だれもかなわないクマを倒さなくちゃいけない」...

主要な登場人物が幼いためか、訳者の意図のためか、文章がやさしく、読みやすいです。話も、それほど残酷なシーンも無く、派手な魔法とかもなく、ファンタジーの要素もしっかり入ってはいますが、世界がしっかりできていて、落ち着いた作品です。本書は６巻シリーズの第一巻なので、次も楽しみです。

本屋に平積みされていたのでついつい手にとってしまったんですが、これが結構面白いです。序盤からぐいぐいと引き込まれる展開であっという間に読み終わりました。普段西洋のファンタジーを読んでいるからか、よくあるファンタジーとはのちょっと違った感じを受けたんですが、それもそのはず作者はあとがきによると考古学やアメリカ先住民やイヌイットやアイヌ…などを物語の参考にしたそうで。西洋の考え方とはちょっと違う印象を受けます。そしてまたそこが新鮮。
主人公と旅をともにするオオカミの子・ウルフの目線で話が語られるところもおもしろいです。
全６巻ということらしいので続編に期待です。
