ＹＡだからといって侮るなかれ。本書には、現実を見据えた毒がある。人から受ける悪意は、多かれ少なかれ誰もが経験するもの。まして、それが子どもの間で起こることなら、その悪意に容赦はない。しかし、本書で語られる『悪』は常識の範疇をこえている。
一人の歪んだ少女（チューリップ）の行状が、語り手ナタリーの目を通して描かれる。チューリップの精神は、いわゆる問題児のレベルをはるかにこえている。そこには真の悪意があり、誰も彼女に干渉することはできない。いったい、これほどまでに育ってしまった『悪』の芽を摘みとることはできるのか？悩むナタリーとそれを取り巻く善意の仮面をつけた無力な大人たち。
犯罪に手を染める子どもという厳しい事実をクローズアップした本書は、問題を提議して幕を閉じる。答えはみつからない。本書を読んだ子どもは、いったいどう感じるのだろう？これをフィクションとして、すぐ忘れてしまうのだろうか？それとも、この問題を自分の中に育てていくのだろうか？我々大人は、何に気をつけていけばいいのだろうか？どこで、勇気をしめせばいいのだろうか？

いつもの軽妙なタッチは、なりをひそめている。
笑わせて深刻なテーマにも未来や救いを感じさせたアン・ファインは、ここにはいない。
まるで恋に落ちたように、私も同性の友達にひきつけられたことがある。
理由なんて説明できない。
ただいっしょにいることが、いっしょに何かすることが喜びだった。
いいことも。悪いことも。

大人は子どもを良くすることもできるのに、見捨てることはもっと簡単にしてしまうようだ。
チューリップのしていることは、全て大人たちが彼女にしたことの裏返しなのだ。
「どんな聖人にも過去がある。どんな罪人にも未来がある」
と言うのなら、どうして誰もあと一歩踏み込んでチューリップを、そしてナタリーを助けなかったのだろう。
自分が傷つき様々なものを失うよりは、ひとりの少女を見捨てる方が、たいした問題ではないのだ。
そう、この本を読んで胸を痛めた私たちでさえ。
親でさえ。

人は闇の世界にひかれる。
もう一歩のところで踏みとどまり、光の世界に戻れる者がいる一方で、そのまま落ちて行ってしまう者もいる。
その違いはいったいどこにあるのだろう。
自分の意思の力か、それても取り巻く環境の力か。
自分自身の人生を考えることができる本。
