誰しもサンタクロースを信じていた時があったはず。
トールキンは、サンタクロースになりすまし、自分の息子へあてて（なんと息子が１９歳になるまで！）クリスマスの日に毎年手紙を書き続けている。その手紙を収録した貴重な本である。
手紙の内容や美しさはトールキンならではとひたすら関心するが、誰しもトールキンの息子へのやさしい愛情に心打たれるはず。息子が１９歳になった時のサンタクロースからの最後の別れの手紙は、涙なしには読めない。たとえ大人になっても、その存在を信じる限り、サンタクロースはどこかに居るのではないかなと思わせてくれた珠玉の一冊である。
