物語の最終章、指輪に支配されつつあるフロドは使命を果たせるのか？圧倒的な大群に立ち向かっているアラゴルンはじめ指輪の仲間達の運命は？　この決着がつくシーンではなぜかワグナーのあの序曲が頭の中に鳴り響きました。重要な役目を果たすゴクリ、この落ちはガンダルフも私も少し予想してましたが、私は彼に何とも言えない哀れさを感じました。『一切合財が終わる今、ここにいてくれて嬉しいよ、サム』この気持ちは旅の間ずっとフロドが抱いていた気持ちでしょう。私もサムに感謝！　第1部でのエルロンドの言葉『大いなる者の目がよそを向いている時、小なる者の手がやむにやまれずしてそれを成し遂げるのだ』普段は目立たないけれどいざとなるとリーダーシップを発揮してくれる人いますよね。トールキンが描きたかったのは英雄ではなく、そういう平和を愛する力無き普通の人々ではないでしょうか。ホビット4人組は物語を締めくくる新たな試練に出会います。4人の成長振りが良く出ていて感動ものです。そして灰色港での別れ。『愛する者が危機に瀕している場合、誰かがそれを放棄し失わなければならない。ほかの者がそれを持っていられるように。』この言葉は胸に突き刺さります。現実の人間の歴史の中にも大勢実在したと思います。
終わって欲しくない、ずっと物語が続いて欲しい。さあもう一度最初から読むぞ~！

文庫にして9冊・・・読み終わるまで最短で一日？長くて数ヶ月？人それぞれの旅路もこの第三部でとうとうおしまいです。

『指輪物語』は、トールキンが作り出した3万年の（架空と言ってしまうには余りにも惜しい、有史以前の地球の歴史にしてパラレルワールドとでも呼びたい位）の歴史のハイライトに過ぎません。しかし『トールキン指輪物語事典』にもあるように、『指輪物語』は、それまでの歴史を象徴し、背負う、最大のハイライトである指輪戦争を描いたものです。

指輪戦争の終結は、中つ国の自由の再獲得と、指輪の破壊、人間の王国の統一、そして第三紀の終わりです。「王の帰還」というサブタイトル通り、人間の王国が再統一され、ここから、我々にもなじみのある人間の時代が始まる、という実に壮大な構想なのです。

「やがて哀しき」まさにこの言葉がピッタリです。私は指輪の破壊に関するあたりで、あまりに強烈なオチに数瞬の間呆然としてしまいました。
そして今でも、ずっとずっと『指輪物語』の余韻の中にいます。
ひとたびの終わり、そして始まり。終わっていて終わらない物語。
恐らく私はこの物語は永遠に続くと感じているのだと思います。

第三紀の終わり、フロドをはじめ、指輪に関わった者たちはどうなったのか・・・
本文の幕切れは非常に余韻ある、何とも胸にしみるものです。
時間的にその後どうなったのか、詳しくは単行本版のみで出ている『追補編』の年表をご覧下さい。物語の最後の最後まで載っていて、これまた何ともしんみりとします。

しかし、やっぱり、まだ物語は続いている気がします。どこかで。

大長編『指輪物語』の最終部。
指輪をめぐる戦いや旅はどうなっていくのでしょう？「王」の帰還とは誰の
ことでしょう？
感動のラストへ向けて、指輪の仲間たちそれぞれにおこる冒険を描きます。
また、アラゴルンとアルウェンや、力の指輪の所持者など、少しずついろいろ
なことがわかってきます。

『ホビットの冒険』からお馴染みのキャラクター、ゴクリも意外な働きをする
ということで、見逃せない一冊です！
世界中を熱狂させたこの壮大な神話的ファンタジーの終わりには、本当に
あったような気がしてしまう物語の舞台「中つ国」への懐古の思いを感じる
かもしれません。
